I visited the National Portrait Gallery to see the work of Grayson Perry. His Chanel 4 program 'Who Are You' explores the ways in which portraiture can be revealed. My favourite pieces were 'The Ashford Jibab', 'Jesus Army Money Box', 'Memory Jar', 'I am a Man', and 'Melanie Georgina and Sarah'. These were, I found, the most powerful pieces. The piece I liked the least was the Jeff Huhne pot. I really felt, like most artists work, that an emotional connection had been made with the more powerful pieces. The pieces that I did not respond as well to had an air of kitsch about them ........but that may very well have been the point. The surprise to me was the piece 'Melanie Georgina and Sarah'. Three women were depicted with references to african tribal effigy, but all three figures were serenely happy. A joy to behold.
